TV is still an integral part of Kiwi life with 3.2 million viewers (73% of our population) watching linear TV each week, and spending over 2 hours per day watching TV. It is no surprise that local content is at the heart of the top programmes enjoyed by Kiwis.
In the last quarter, 11 local shows feature in the top 15 programmes, across a range of genres from current affairs, sports, entertainment, and documentary/factual.
Top Rating Programmes from Jan-Mar 2021: All People 25-54 years
Kiwis have expressed a strong preference for seeing their own stories on screen and with many overseas productions delayed due to COVID-19, there has never been a greater reason to support local. And the networks have listened!
In 2020, TVNZ produced 95 new local shows and have renewed their commitment to showcasing more homegrown stories this year: “2021 will be our biggest local content slate in over a decade”, says Director of Content, Cate Slater. Discovery NZ is also following suit with over 2,100 hours of local content in production this year.
